I wouldn't say not to use shared hosting. I just haven't personally had much luck with them. I love ColdFusion as a programming language, but it wasn't originally designed with shared hosting in mind. Both Allaire and Macromedia made this clear. Adobe has worked hard to help make CF run better in shared environments (as seen with CF8). But knowing what I know about CF, I'd never personally use it for any type of production use (but that's my personal decision). As Matthew Williams pointed out, he's had good luck running FarCry in a shared hosting environment. When it all boils down, if hosting cost is an issue (VPS vs shared hosting) then stick with shared hosting... just find one that works well for you. If you ask a sales person, most shared hosting companies will give you a 15 or 30 day trial (tell them that you want to test the product you're using to see if it works). That's what I did during the FarCry 5 beta - I talked to a few shared hosting companies to help test FC5 in shared hosting environments. HMS was the most flexible I dealt with (they were willing to bend backwards to get FC5 to work), but I also had the most road bumps and issues on their servers. Note: I only tried 3 hosting companies - and only just to get a basic site installed and tested the site for 5 minutes. Then I deleted the account. Due to minimal testing, my results weren't conclusive enough to say who was good and who was bad to use (they all worked with FC5 - and once the site loaded, most of what I needed was cached and the site ran fine).
