I know you would like a short single answer solution but because there are some basic things you first need to see and know, it's really the best way to go. It takes some hours but then you will really grasp the basics and even more. And even better, because every plugin developer needs to create the plugin as farcry likes it to be created (you will like it too), you will never have any frustrated joomla (my own experience) like headache hours anymore trying to solve conflicting code of different developers... what a peace... So it takes some effort to read and study, but then you will have only happiness and all the time to be busy with the fun part, developing. Cheers!
