A workaround of a sort... have your users set their "root" level to be the top most level they need to work with in the tree (in the drop down at the top of the tree). It's not much of a solution, but it will make it load faster. Personally, I'm trying to get a customer to fund turning the current tree into a flex based tree (based on the category tree flex project already in place). I doubt they're going to go for it, and I don't have enough non-paid free time to do it otherwise :(.
