Thought I would post a followup here.

The issue we are experiencing has to do with .avi files that were
converted to .swf files some time ago using some tool.. it appears
that this "tool" (probably some freeware) embeded "player" controls
into the swf which included some sort of version checking. It appears
that the .swf file is reading  version 10 as "below" the minimum
required 6 and as such outputing "download Flash Player 6".. ofcourse,
noone knows what tool, or where the original .avi files are... :(
