ok, for those playing at home, this is what is needed
    <cfset stFilterMetaData.username.ftEditMethod = "ftEditUsername_filter"
/>

(this is the second time I have been caught out with this - sorry Blair,
next time I will pay more attention)

What would be nice though, is if you could just do the following
    <cfset stFilterMetaData.username.ftEditMethod = "" />
which would then just use FormTool default edit for that type (eg field)
So then you don't have to create a function that just does a default edit
