Mmm i think you can add this crisp and clear explanation as a bug, you
should indeed be able to clear the filter.

I just tried this in a same situation and you can indeed not clear the
filter, i tried to click on edit blank the value, but as the field is
required you can't.

So if you bug it i will vote for it.
