OK, I've done some more investigations and found something, well, interesting.
The reason it was crashing on certain objects in the log was because there was no corresponding entry in the refObbjects table, hence FarCry couldn't work out what type the object was. I've put a script in place that will add the missing entries to the refObjects and it works now. Should I put this into the Bug JIRA, because it seems like it could be a tempermental problem as some objects worked fine before, and I can't see any consistent pattern that would suggest why it's not working.
