Out-of-the-box it can't be easily done (I've done it, but I had to make quite a few changes to the way core works - I wasn't really happy with the solution in the end). However, Daemon was working on a plugin to allow you to do it with, say, different subdomains. The plugin was for their own internal use, but maybe you could ask them about the plugin.
