I have just discovered that my previous hack for 5.2.6 had to be moved
from packages/formtools/array.cfc to join.cfc (with minor patching)

I put my own cfcase in
        <cfswitch expression="#arguments.stMetadata.ftRenderType#">
<!--- ajm --->
        <cfcase value="checkbox">


I am still not sure how to go about moving that out of the core and into a
library webskin
