As soon as I submitted, i realized the obvious thing to check. Getting rid of the ftType declaration (ftType="richtext") also fixes the issue. So most likely a jQuery / TinyMCE thing.
Although I am overriding jQuery to ver 1.4.4, the problem doesn't go away with the default library.
