As a rule of thumb, extending an existing content type (like dmFile) should be the exception. Always best to create your own content type that points to **types**. The only time you should find yourself extending an existing content type is to modify the default metadata, or perhaps add one or two properties to suit your needs. For example, you would have a dmFile in your project extending dmFile in core.
