OK - aside from obviously having to create a custom rule (or two) - would you also consider it a fairly easy thing to provide this functionality through the actual site interface rather than the Admin interface? I am thinking "portal" here.
Yep this isn't too hard to do either. We have implemented this sort of thing for Roche Pharmaceuticals. Their intranet (sorry can't post URL) has a section called MyRoche which allows users to log in and add their own news. This is all done via the front end, not logging in to the admin interface. This could be extended to add other objects, update profile details etc
