That is exactly what I am doing for some "indices" prices in the new FarCry version of our site. We have a left column container (FarCry container edited from the site page) which has an "includedObj" added to it. This object loads up the current indices from our database and displays them in a nice table. So - to do what you have mentioned - you will also want to look at "containers" in addition to the includedObj. If this is the only purpose you need for the custom include, then you probably wont need to worry about an dmInclude template for it (these are mainly for a main page and/or teaser rules, etc.).
