Looking throught the documentation of friendly URLs there seems to be a lot to be done that a shared hosting account ISP would be unwilling to do to enable friendly URLs functinoing. Am I right in this and if so are there any alternatives? I really want to use friendly URLs.

Both FriendlyURL and GeoLocator are servlets that need to be configured for your application. They're just java files that need to be placed in the JVM's class path.

Both plug-ins are public domain and open source -- plus would benefit other users in the shared platform. These are things you should point out to your host when trying to get them configured for the shared environment.
