I only chose that part of your post to hook the code to because you make an extremely valid point (look at the response already.) I keep promising Brendan I'll write up a tutorial, and still have every intention of doing so.
The idea behind this code is to create "standards compliant" (http://webstandardsgroup.org/standards/) nested lists using the <UL> and <LI> tags.
These lists can be styled real purdy like using CSS, even for drop downs (http://www.alistapart.com/articles/dropdowns/), as my tutorial will demonstrate.
Well, I guess I better get writing. There goes my long weekend :)

Thanks for that Ben. I wasn't looking for it myself (as I have been building my own multi-level menus since the earlier versions).
What have been doing (when people requested it from me) is sending them the old ndeHeader/Footer and pointing them at the ../webskin directory for coding hints.
