We have used this typically if there is node (not created under home for navigation, but rather under root so it appears in the tab as supporting content) that the client has designated for specific content (i.e, case studies, ecom, biz directory).  We have simply created a rule and pushed the content to the site in the usual way you would any rule based content.  We have also found it handy for the FC ecom system we have completed.  We built the ecom tree from a modified dmHTML object and now use categories to feature products around the site.
