My thanks to Kai and to Michael for this thread, and to all of you in the FarCry community for the terrific work you have done to date.

Like Kai, I am new to the FarCry framework and I am totally wowed. I can hardly wait to wrap a couple of ongoing projects and be free to turn all my attention to the FarCry learning curve.

Michael kindly shared some tips with me earlier, and I've spent quite a lot of time in the Mail Archive since I got on the list, so for now, I'd like to simply ask for recommendations on web hosts who offer FarCry in shared hosting environments. In the old days from 1998 to 2002, I used Perl for interactivity and I ran my own servers. Two plus years ago, I moved into Coldfusion development, and haven't looked back. Since then, I've also been using shared hosting and am not interested in going back to administering a dedicated server. If anyone has recommendations about good hosts specializing in CF and offering FarCry, I'd really appreciate hearing from you, off-list if you prefer.

All my best, ~ Alexis

Since this is my first posting here, I write a little intro:
I'm quite new to the FarCry CMS/app framework and my first impression is:
- The product itself seems to be powerful, functional and flexible
=> Congratulations to this !

[MJS] I am sure everyone here says thanks

- The documentation sort of "sucks", i.e. it's not so easy to recognize
the potential functionality and how to leverage it

[MJS] The web site has many walkthroughs, manuals, and a CFC browser that
will all greatly help to understand the incredible amount of power in FC.

=> Hopefully one can get nevertheless things painlessly done with FarCry
because it is self-explanatory and/or more documentation/comprehensive
examples are given

[MJS] As with any expansive code base, there is a learning
curve. However, I think you will find by posting to the list we will all
look to help to the best of abilities.

Several questions:
1. In "FarCry Open Source CMS -- FarCry Overview.htm" I have read:
"This approach allows FarCry to easily adapt to handle a wide range of
content types that may be required now or into the future. Some of the
content types already available for FarCry include HTML pages, news,
events, facts, polls, competitions, careers, FAQs, tenders and many more.
No matter what your future requirements, we believe FarCry will be able
to fit the bill."
Where ARE those content types "polls, competitions, careers, FAQs,
tenders" ?

[MJS] I do not know about everyone on the list but via extending core types
or creating custom types, you can easily add new fields to create these
types. Polls can be added by reviewing the Pollster walkthrough. FAQs can
be leveraged, depending on your needs, via the existing Fact content type.
We have have mad a careers section by simply creating a custom type based on
dmHTML object. As for competitions, I have not done one, but lurking in the
CFC's is sure to be what you need.

2. I want to build app functionality that uses existing FC content type
objects and may generate new FC content type objects
- What would be the canonical methodology to realize more demanding app
functionality in FC (looking at the newly offered API browser I have seen
that the FC core components seem to offer a lot of functionality already
...) ?
- Does it make sense or is it even recommended to build demanding app
functionality using frameworks like "MachII" or "onTap framework (Isaac
Dealey)" ? And if so, how would this best be done in a seamless manner ?

[MJS] From an application standpoint, many on this list have developed
quite robust sites that use the core and custom types. The FC framework
scales very well and need not be extended into other frameworks. We have
developed sites on IIS/Apache and from CF pro to J2EE and in all cases even
under a heavy load FC (and most important the webserver and CF :-) ) has
proven itself time and time again. Because FC uses effcient code and has a
heavy reliance on CFCs, it is, out of the box, ready for demanding
application development.

I hope this is helpful. And welcome aboard.

TIA for Your answers
