And I just realized that someone posted a link to a Macromedia techNote 
about it which exlpains the same thing (and also talks about "race 
condistions".

excerpt:
"With ColdFusion MX, if you do not lock shared scope variables, it will 
no longer cause server instability or crashes."

note: Just still be warry about "race conditions".
