Sorry, I think I missed the full question. For our custom type, we link the permission for it to the MainNavAdminTab and rely on other policy settings (AdminCOAPITab, AdminGeneralTab, AdminSearchTab set to "no") to protect the Admin tab from contributors. Or else, as I understand it, you can create a whole new permission for a custom type.

I have done some modifications to the admin sections by following one of
the walkthroughs but I need to get more information about permissions. The
examples use permission="MainNavAdminTab" which works for those that have
admin level of permission but what do I call out for contributors,
publishiers, etc.?
