Sounds like the symbolic link functionality may work here. When you create the shared content in branch 1, be sure to create nav aliases for each of the navigation nodes you want to share. For example, when you create the nav node "Shared Content 1" click on advanced options and create a nav alias named "SharedContent1". Then when you create the same node in branch 2, go to advanced options and select "SharedContent1" from the symbolic link menu. This will allow you to create and manage the content under branch 1, but use it throughout your site.
