OK - looks like I am doing it the correct (only) way. It works, I can live with it.

Containers are just containers - they don't specify the formatting of
the individual bits of content, just the id, placement and pre/post
html.

What you want be looking at are the publishing rules -- they're the
ones that fetch and format the individual teasers, the result of which
gets passed as a chunk back to the container for insertion into the
page.
