this is interesting, i think i have run into this error 500 sometimes as
well.
We use CF6.1 with IIS6.
Why do you say its only possible to fix it with a full version of Jrun4?
(i assume you refer to 'full version' as ColdFusion for JRun4 in
contrast to the 'server configuration' with embedded Jrun and not J2EE)
The JRun updaters work for both versions and in between i saw already
JRun4 version 5.
Currently i would not like to switch to CF7 cause i prefer to wait for
version 7.1 ;-)
