Just wondering about symbolic links on dmNAvigation objects, what are
they used for, and how could one go about using it?

Using this functionality allows you to have the user display the content from another navigation node while still keeping the user where you intended them to stay (within the site tree).

A good example of when to use this is when you have a page's content replicated in different areas of your site, but want different stylesheets displayed in each one (say for example you have different sitelets that all have the same Privacy Policy content).

To use this functionality, the target content needs to have a unique alias (Farcry still does not stop you from creating multiple aliases with the same name - this has been a known bug for a long time now). After you've given the navigation node an alias, you can refer to it when creating another navigation node somewhere else (referencing its symbolic link which will automatically be available in a drop down list). So now when someone clicks on the link containing the symbolic link, they will be displaying the content drawn from another area in the tree, yet they will never have left where you intended them to be.

Here's an example for one of my recent clients. They currently have 3 sitelets. The content in the footer for all three sites is identical (except for the SiteMaps). The only significant difference you'll notice is that the color stylesheet has changed. Farcry automatically takes care of this stytlesheet change for me because I've assigned the stylesheet to one of the parents of the nav node with the symbolic link.

All of this was accomplished using symbolic links (and although this explanation is long and poorly written, it only takes seconds to implement this feature). Also you'll notice in the URL string that I gave each alias a unique name.
