Hello friends of Farsight, It's that time of the year again, birds are singing, the flowers are coming out (ok not really in Montréal) and Google's Summer of Code is recruiting. You're a student, you want to do cool farsight-y things this summer? And be paid by Google? Now's your chance!
The major projects that we'd like to see done this summer are Farsight 2 plug-ins for the various non-free protocols. The major ones are: - MSN, that's the "easiest", there is telepathy-butterfly (a connection manager) already, and most of the stuff has already been reverse-engineered. - Yahoo, for that we'd need a whole new connection manager, but I think the voip/webcam stuff itself isn't too hard. Some work was done on past versions of farsight for yahoo, I'm not certain what's still usable. - AOL Instant messenger, there was already in the past a summer of code on it, the student wrote a connection manager in Java, but never got to implementing the voip part. It would probably have to be restarted from scratch (Java sucks). GnomeICU and pidgin already have good protocol implementations. - iChat's bonjour-y protocol (with telepathy-salut) ? ICQ ? Other ? The preferred license if the LGPL 2 or later. Farsight plug-ins should be in C and connection managers can be in either C or Python. Please submit any proposal under the GStreamer project.
