Looks like you are dealing with HDF5 data based on the way you used 
the term 'datasets'.  If this assumption is correct, then what you are 
doing seems to reasonable to me -- basically you are writing a few 
rows at a time in the outer loop and the adding data one column at a 
time in the inner loop.

When you say you brick size is 1*1*2, I would say you are appending 
two rows at a time (size must be 2 when you call tablex::append). 
Guess this is working fine for me.  I am not sure what sort of problem 
you are encountering when working with 4*4*4 bricks.

Does my description sounds like what you are actually doing?  What is 
the problem with adding 64 rows at a time?
