Aha, you’re right.  The resulting binary works with builtin output,
and also works with a Soundcraft Notepad-8fx as a USB audio device.
But it does *not* work with my Apogee Duet, which is also USB.

I updated the Duet's drivers & firmware, but nothing changed.  I also tried
several different sample rates.  The rest of the OS seems to be able
to use the Duet no problem.  Weird.
