Here's an article with a fairly good synopsis of where CC has got us today:
http://subsol.c3.hu/subsol_2/contributors0/nimustext.html

However, I'm not sure whether its authors are demonstrating that CC failed
to create an NC commons, or a commons full-stop. I'm worried they may have
preferred the former.

Two nastinesses:

1) Associating 'Creative Commons' with the author's rightful freedom to
choose the liberties they restore to the public. [NB This is a semantic
abuse]

2) Associating a 'Creative Commons' as an artistic commonwealth specifically
protected against commercial exploitation. [It is enclosure that's wrong,
not commerce]

All CC has done is to consolidate copyright and to encourage the
continuation of the delusion that you can't make money without being able to
sell your copyright to a publisher - hence the assumed need for authors to
reserve commercial exploitation privileges.

CC = Copyright Confused
