#2838: V3: Initial selection bug

This bug is probably connected with initial selection.
Steps to reproduce:
-Open sample.html?sample=replacebyclass
-(Don't click the document). Click button to insert a Smile
-Click any smile.
Result: JS error.
The same behavior using Special Character dialog or after using New Page
button.
It occur in IE, Safari, Opera but not in FF.
