Hello, this is partly offtopic, but I come back to FreeDos later in this mail!

But what finally made its way to the [...] > No, Linux is a bit more than just a rewrite of Minix... ;-)) Okay, calling Linux a rewrite of BSD was meant to be provoking (although it's not so false) To Torvalds book: I find, that he's really unfair against Richard Stallman and GNU! He pretends, that it would only be the compiler, that comes from GNU. But that's definitely false! Linux wouldn't even be runnable without the GNU system. Have a look at all these "Linux-Utils" - they're nearly all GNU, just like the bash. And even if you could imagine a Linux without them, I could never imagine a Linux without GNU-LibC. To Minix: Minix was never meant to be a system for real using. It was meant to be a very simple system with a very simple source code wich fits into the heads of students. ;-) And in this it still has its place, wich isn't filled by Linux or other systems. To FreeDos and Minix: Today there are also versions of Minix called DosMinix. Someone on this list asked for a Unix Emulator for Dos - you can use this DosMinix. It's not only booted from Dos, but it really runs within Dos. When you shut down DosMinix and leave the boot-program you're instantly back to Dos. And it's very quickly booting. I've already tested the 386 version of it with FreeDos. Another point, that could become interresting for FreeDos is it's compiler collection - because it it 16Bit! Perhaps this could be ported? Minix is free software now (since 2000), so I think that is also true for it's compiler. The "Amsterdam Compiler Kit (ACK)" can compile C, Modula-2 and Pascal. The sources are shipped with Minix (incomplete in 2.0.0 - fetch 2.0.2 or 2.0.3).
