I have been using software based FDE for a while, and I certainly notice a difference when compiling using Visual Studio. I can tell the difference because I have the same laptop at home which doesn't have FDE. Compiling on my home laptop is faster.
Having said that, I don't see much differnce when using Open Office applications or browsing internet. On gimp, photoshop I can see slight degradation as expected.
