I always presumed that the big firms ask for all that info because they get alot of final year undergrads applying who would have little or no work experience so exam results is the only way to judge some of the applications. I applied for a few of them and didn't go into too much detail, just average grades (which admittedly were average in and of themselves). I didn't do a law undergrad either and most of the exams I took were too subject specific and irrelevant for a law firm. I should probably mention that I never got interviewed for a big five firm though!
If you have the info, there's no harm in putting it in I'd say (unless you're trying to hide sh**ty results) but I'd concentrate on maximising your sections on previous work experience as that's where you'll get the chance to set yourself apart from the thousands of others (I heard that McCann Fitzgerald got 4000 applications last year!). I'd also say to not put of all your eggs in one (or 5) baskets. Carpet bomb every firm with a CV but try and tailor the covering letter specifically. Time consuming I know, but generic cover letters can be spotted a mile off...
