Essentially we start up privileged and pam authenticates us. We do whatever is needed (e.g. create directories, run rpm) as root, then drop privs for the build process. Obviously we haven't got it quite right for the running-as-root case. I suspect just adding root to the 'mock' group would take care of this problem.
