I spent some time looking into this, not much luck determining the cause on HEAD, so I started traversing previous commits trying to determine when this crept in.
I can reproduce the NPE as far back as 95cec2340fd7c026d95016eb3b24987de63ef803 (24 April) The rebuilder works as of fe760b0e8204bf5307e3716cda1e1c5b63335516 (20 Apr) In between, there are various build/test failures, and I haven't had a chance to investigate further.
