well, the dreaded moment has come -- i need to organize my objects in  
collections.
dreaded because i was never able to find any useful information beyond the  
tutorials #1 and #2 (and the website is particularly unintuitive ...).

so, i believe to have understand that a collection is basically  
constituded by adding a specific RELS-EXT datastream to each object in  
which the object states its affiliation to a collection. ie there's no  
particular collection object that knows about its members.

my objects are basically images with describing metadata in an inline xml  
datastream, indexed and searched via gsearch -- does gsearch know about  
collections?
additionally the collections should have an image attached, so i can line  
up the exiting collections in a web interface and add a generic thumbnail,  
describing the type of images contained. is that feasible?
