Glad it helped.  My mistake - to escape % you need to use %% (I just love
the consistency!)

Thank you for the advice. Yes, I was running curl from Windows, and was
so busy concentrating on the ampersand, as the usual source of problems,
that I had ignored the percent. Anyhow, using the caret doesn't work
either from Windows - it produces "^6" from "^%26", but you have solved
my problem, as I can just move the scripts over to a Linux box, where
they do indeed work as I had expected. So, progress.
