Dear Fedora Community - For those of you who don't know me, my name is Valorie Hollister and I am the Director of Community Programs for the DuraSpace organization. I have been working with the DSpace community for the last 3 years, building community groups, resources and tools to help promote networking and collaborations primarily within the DSpace community. With Thorny Staples departure from the DuraSpace organization last week, my role has been expanded to lead community efforts to promote initiatives that focus on broadening the reach of the DuraSpace community. Over the next few months I will work with both the Fedora and DSpace user communities to refine the DuraSpace community group framework and will work closely with the existing groups' organizing committees and/or group members to help promote their future activities and successes. For more information about the recent changes, please see the blog post: http://expertvoices.nsdl.org/duraspace/2010/10/20/duraspace-community-outreach-update/.
There are many initiatives that I plan to work on -- but I'm sure many of you will agree that a very basic part of promoting networking and collaboration within a community is an identification of who is using the software and as well as an understanding of how they are using it. Last year the DSpace Global Outreach Committee (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/DSPACE/DSpace+Global+Outreach+Cmte) and I developed a "Who's Using DSpace" database (http://www.dspace.org/index.php?option=com_formdashboard&Itemid=151&lang=en) which aims to provide many useful bits of information about all known DSpace instances. This data can be filtered and searched, so that members of the DSpace community can discover other institutions which have similar repositories, environments, customizations and/or interests to their own. Over the next year I would like to expand the existing Fedora Commons registry (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FCCommReg/Fedora+Commons+Registry) -- and provide more useful information to the user community to promote networking and collaboration. This is where I could use some help from the Fedora community. I would like to find some volunteers to help identify what information would be most useful to include in a revised Fedora user database. If you have a few moments, please take a look at the "Who's Using DSpace" registry (http://www.dspace.org/index.php?option=com_formdashboard&Itemid=151&lang=en) and let me know if you have some immediate feedback on what information/fields would be most meaningful for Fedora users -- particularly information that could be gathered from all users and would help promote connections and collaborations among Fedora users. You can email me directly at vhollis...@duraspace.org to share your ideas. I look forward to working more with the Fedora community in the future and welcome you're feedback on how I can best serve the community.
