Optional is fine since 3.4. See

https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/hydra/commonMetadata+cModel

as an example.

Subject: [fcrepo-user] contentModel query

Hi!

is it possible to specify an optional datastream when creating a new Cmodel?
ie if you want to specify that an object beloinging to a certain model may
have the following optional data streams in addition to the mandatory
datastreams, but no others?

for example, to specify

DatastreamIDs

'SOME_SORT_OF_METADATA', 'THIS_SORT_OF_IMAGE' (mandatory datastreams )

but also (in some way)

'THAT_SORT_OF_IMAGE' (as a specified optional additional datastream)

or is it in fact only possible to specify mandatory datastreams, with any
additional datastreams which may or may not be present simply remaining
unspecified
