Hi Rebecca I don't believe there's a way to include a single quote in a findObjects query.
Nor does the basic search support a "not" operator. The basic search (https://wiki.duraspace.org/display/FCR30/Basic+Search) is basic - for more complex searching you might want to consider an external search service such as Solr etc. Please do feel free to submit JIRA issues for these.
