Thanks, Steve, for your inputs. I just want to quickly report back to the list. After narrowing down the issue we ended up installing a samba patch and modifying the user permissions for the share. It seemed that we were able to write to the share and read the file structure on it, but could not access the content of the files. That's where Fedora hit its problems and spawned the processor as it continually tried to read.
Thus, short answer: no problem directly connected to Fedora, but the underlying connection to the CIFS/Samba-share.
