Jenna,

By "256 volume" limit, are you referring to the number of directories that are 
created under objectStore/ and datastreamStore/?

If so, that's just the default configuration of the Akubra module Fedora is 
using. You can tweak the path pattern in your 
$FEDORA_HOME/server/config/spring/akubra-llstore.xml to use a different path 
pattern, such as "##/##" or "#/###", to suit your fancy.
