Thanks for the reply Scott. I saw some bugs related to errors when providing
a checksum for managed content, etc. Didn't see anything about
local.fedora.server not resolving properly for checksumming external
content.  I might not be looking in the right place though.  Everything
actually works fine if I replace, local.fedora.server with the hostname in
dsLocation.  The checksums get computed properly.  

At the moment, we can't upgrade production version.  I might have to setup a
test instance with a newer version to see if the problem exists there...

In the meantime, is anyone else computing checksums for external content
using local.fedora.server as a variable for hostname?  If so, is it working?
