I have found a plausible way to get at the mal-formed query syntax:

When you browse the repository and then go back by "hacking off" a  
part of the URL to

http://fedora.clarin-d.uni-saarland.de/fedora/objects/

(note the final slash!) you get a working instance of the object  
search form in fcrepo-3.6, emitting the wrong queries I reported  
below. This is now a bug IMO.
fedora commons MUST send the correct query syntax in this case,  
omitting the final slash.
