we solved the problem with our fedoragsearch logging.- the problem was 
in fact external to fedoragsearch itself and lay in an interaction with 
another part of our system. A Context element in the server.xml  for 
another webapp on the same tomcat was causing fedoragsearch to look in 
the wrong webapp context path for the log4j configuration file. Adding 
an additional  context element for fedoragsearch to the server.xml 
solved the problem.
