I think I started with schema-4.2.0-for-fgs-2.6.xml as a skeleton.

Our project was an upgrade from a very old set up and we have a few custom
fields.

My suggestion is yes, start with schema-4.2.0-for-fgs-2.6.xml template and
customize it to your needs.
