This sounds quite serious for many of us who install GNU-Linux on many
kinds of machines. In a lot of these cases directly rp-pppoe or dialup
have to be used to connect to the Net and perform yum update. 

Can't rp-pppoe or wvdial be added ad-hoc to the installer thing, at
least on some USB installer spin?
