At some point I used multi-rsync: http://freshmeat.net/projects/mrsync multi-rsync transfers files from one master machine to many machines using UNIX socket's multicasting capability. It worked pretty well. I think I attempted to push it to FE a long time ago (when we were doing reviews by emails) and no-one reviewed it IIRC.
