For understanding what different parts there are to contribute to, yes
(helped show other non-technical areas to contribute to)

Not much - wcidff was a pointer, but not much tooling for getting
started. That was usually up to the receiving ends of whatever place you
reached in the clickthrough. Some teams pointed you towards excellent
on-boarding material (e.g. Fedora Magazine) while others dumped you at
their wiki page. From the perspective of a new contributor, this was
difficult and confusing to figure out, especially if the wiki page
wasn't well-maintained or unclear about how to get involved.
