Thanks for replying.   I see MAKEDEV in the sbin directory, and can do a MAN if 
I'm in the doc directory, but it tells me it can't find such a command when I 
type it (even when I'm in sbin.

What do I need to do?

My sound card (Maestro3) isn't working.   
 
lspci lists the card, but when I use the auto detect tool, it doesn't
find it.
