Yes. Another idea which I'm in the process of adding to Squashfs is
selective metadata prefetch. Currently even with file sorting, you
still experience some disk head seeking when inode and directory
information is read. If on filesystem mount some or all of the
metadata was prefetched this would minimise seek time.
Why stop at metadata ;)
