These are templates, so the shebangs should remain, but they are not in themselves executable scripts. As far as the undefined symbols, this is really an issue in new. New provides two libraries, libnewfmt_ptrn and libnewtemplate. I'm in the process of determining how to decouple the fmt_ptrn library from the template library -- template_find is the one sticking point.
